Sinopsis
El Programa SciELO se creó a finales de la década de 1990, cuando la idea del libre acceso a los contenidos académicos comenzó a cobrar impulso, incluso antes de que se hubiera acuñado el término "acceso abierto". En aquella época, el acceso a las publicaciones académicas era limitado y costoso, restringido a las bibliotecas universitarias y a las colecciones a las que estaban suscritas. Con la aparición de la World Wide Web, el acceso electrónico a la información académica se hizo prácticamente posible, permitiendo una difusión más amplia y rápida de las publicaciones científicas. Sin embargo, el sistema de publicación de acceso restringido seguía dominando. En este libro se exploran los orígenes y la evolución del movimiento de acceso abierto desde la perspectiva de personas que participaron activamente. Estos pioneros del acceso abierto compartieron sus experiencias, éxitos, colaboraciones y visiones para el futuro con motivo del 25 aniversario de SciELO. El libro rinde homenaje a sus esfuerzos pioneros y al papel crucial desempeñado por SciELO en el apoyo al acceso abierto y en la visibilidad de regiones del mundo que anteriormente estaban subrepresentadas en la comunicación académica global. Esta celebración demuestra cómo SciELO colocó firmemente estas regiones en el mapa de la comunicación académica mundial y contribuyó a fortalecer el movimiento de acceso abierto a lo largo de su exitosa trayectoria.

The SciELO Program was created in the late 1990s when the idea of
free access to scholarly content began to gain momentum, even before
the term “open access” had been coined. At that time, access to
academic publications was limited and costly, restricted to university
libraries
and the collections they subscribed to. With the emergence of the
World Wide Web, electronic access to academic information became
practically possible, allowing for wider and faster dissemination of
scientific publications. However, the restricted access publishing system
still dominated. In this book, the origins and evolution of the open
access movement are explored from the perspective of individuals
who actively participated. These pioneers of open access shared
their experiences, successes, collaborations, and visions for the future
on the occasion of SciELO’s 25th anniversary. The book pays tribute
to their pioneering efforts and the crucial role played by SciELO
in supporting open access and spotlighting regions of the world that were
previously underrepresented in global academic communication.
This celebration demonstrates how SciELO firmly placed these
regions on the map of global academic communication and
contributed to strengthening the open access movement throughout
its successful journey.
